Ramadan, Van Salee, and ancestry. Inspired by Strawberry Singh and Helen Boyd.

I'm a member of an online transcommunity run by author Helen Boyd.  I've been a member of that community for 11 years, the only online community I've followed longer is Slashdot.  Yes, I know...Slashdot. /me shakes head sadly at my own nerdosity.

Last week Helen did a post about Ramadan's History in America.  Which is a VERY long history, much longer than most modern American's think.  Upon seeing that post one of my first thoughts was ... "Berry's going to be doing her annual Ramadan post soon."  Which she did, the next day.

It also reminded me of my own small connection to Islam in America. It might be surprising to some, but yes, I do have one.  While as my readers, acquaintances and friends know, I'm mostly of Celtic ancestry on both my mother's and father's side, but that's not all my ancestry.

I'm descended from one of the first Muslim settlers in the New World, in New Amsterdam aka New York City, actually. And his Q'uran is the oldest known Q'uran in America.  To those who know their history those facts alone are enough to identify him, Anthony Janszoon Van Salee.

Yes, that means I have Moroccan ancestry.  And yes, that also means I'm descended from the woman variously described as Manhattans first "lady of the night" or "The Carrie Bradshaw of Colonial America", Grietse Reyniers.

So inspired by Berry, and my ancestry I decided to do a post with some "ethnic" clothing.  First I did some googling about women's clothing and fashion in Morocco, and after seeing some pictures decided to try to find a kaftan, which I did.  Then I was thinking that perhaps I should search Berry's Blog for a "less pale" skin, but while I was looking through more pictures of Moroccan fashion I found a woman that made me go "squee" and say to myself.  "I guess I really don't have to change my skin...or my hair color."

That woman is the Her Royal Highness, Princess Lalla Salma of Morocco:

Who is an awesome redheaded fashionista-princess-engineer with REALLY nice shoes. She knew she had it "goin on" there.  Google her, she's fabulous.  Yes, she's ethnically Moroccan, there are redheads among the Berbers.

The kaftan I found was the Bilo Rani "Sabah", as it turns out, Berry wore it back in 2013.  The girl always has the scoop, she's the Berry!  I wore it in green because there was a famous utterly fabulous green kaftan that Lalla Salma wore and redheads look good in green.  Sadly, this kaftan shows more cleavage than I wanted, but I like it anyway.

Belleza Betty skin, Hucci Jacmel pumps.

Of course I needed some fabulous jewelry.  (The Princess has some REALLY nice stuff.).  As non-luck would have it, I have the Maharani set from Maxi Gossamer, which I picked up from May's Uber, if I recall correctly.  When I saw the display and the model I thought:  "That model looks like Berry."   "It IS Berry, well who else would you want to model that set?"  The set has two metal choices and several gem colors.  Sadly you have to click on each piece individually, there's no HUD to set them all at once.  Hair is Truth Harmony (Ponytail)

As you can tell, those are not my usual green eyes, but brown ones.  Ikon "Charm" eyes in Chocolate.

Since I was wearing the Maharani set, I went ahead and put on the nose chain, the mang tikka, and the Zaara Chandni Lehenga in Scarlet, to take some pictures of the full set and the Chandni, which I've had for a while.  Might as well go full on Berry-clone, except for the paleness.

I adore the Chandni in this color.  While I adore it, and think it's beautiful, I probably won't pick up the other colors as much as I might want to.  Pale Celtic redheads, even those with Moroccan ancestors, probably shouldn't be wearing lehenga's too often.

Truth Sally hair, which always reminds me of one of the hairstyles of Mad Men's Sally Draper.

Dead Dollz Persephone, it's Sexuregal

Just a quick post here.  I went shopping for a new dress to wear to that Linden Party for Premium residents, I wanted something summery but fashionista-y and well, I wanted to be the best dressed Fashionista there.  I knew of one dress I thought would be good, but looked around a bit at some others before I bought it.  I would have eventually bought it anyway.

I crashed several times at the party, and eventually gave up returning, but I really liked the dress and wore it to my favorite social venue when I logged back in.  I Danced with Charlemagne, and a friend there described the dress/look as this one word:

Sexuregal

 Sexuregal ©®™ Belle Beom

I so loved that neologism that I had to blog the word, and the gown.  This is the Persephone gown from Dead Dollz available at the Secret Affair. An elegant gown with black halter and waist banding, that shows quite a bit of skin at the hip area.  But it's still classy and not so much skin that it makes it non-classy.  Sexuregal!©®™  I also bought the all black version.  Each is L$300.

I paired it with an older Amacci updo, Carol, which works well with the Angsa hat from Schadenfreude.  That hat is currently one of my favorite hats in SL since you have 3 color options for the hat itself and several options for the band and bow.  There's also an option for long flutter tails with the bow and a bowless option.  I love this hat, it appeals to my love of the Blessed Audrey.

That is the Paradigm jewelry set from Amorous, I've worn it before on the blog.  Skin and eyes are my usual Belleza Betty and IKON Lucid eyes in Moor.

White Armory Andraste, Elf-y style

Imagine if you will, a redhead obsessed fashionista visiting the page of the Blogging Elf Arica Storaro to see what lovely fantasy, roleplay and non-fantasy items repurposed for fantasy roleplay items she is wearing.  Because after all, she is an Adorable Redheaded Elf who Shops... a LOT.

Then imagine you see something like this recreation of a non-redheaded Elf, which while very pretty, is NOT redheaded and your whole worldview of Adorable Redheaded Elves who Shop collapses.

The CC as a Blonde Elf Archer

It made the CC cry......Not really, of course. I'm joking.  The Blogging Elf looks good as a blonde too, has been blonde for months, and as everyone knows even redhead obsessed moi goes blonde now and then.  But there is just ....something... about a redheaded elf, and if the Blogging Elf ever goes back to red.....I will SQUEE.  Until then... well I have ears, and a bow and on rare ocassions do fantasy looks.

The CC as a proper redheaded elf-y archer.

In actual truth this blog post was inspired by seeing the White Armory Andraste set and thinking it was "Blogging Elf-y".  Though with that name it's obviously "Dragon Age-y", meaning Dragon Age the game. (No, I don't have Dragon Age: Inquisition yet)  Anyway, I can't remember where I saw it, but I finally figured out it was from White Armory (which is familiar to me) and picked it up.   My guess is that it's based on a template, since it looks somewhat familiar, and I know that White Armory has other template based items.  That said, they DO skillfully texture their template items, so even if you DO see the same templates somewhere else, you might want to pick up the White Armory versions as well.

Then I decided I needed some armor/bracers of some kind and boots.  As not-coincidence would have it, White Armory puts styling info in their packaging so you can easily find what they accessorized it with in the displays.  Which is a GREAT idea with cross-marketing potential that more designers should do.

In this case it was the Lassitude & Ennui Thylacine boots, and the Iktharus Bracers/Cuffs/Collar in Brimstone from Plastik.  I've been a L&E fan for years, and know Jackal Ennui does good work so ran right over to look at the boots and pick them up.   The Iktharus armor set comes in a LOT more colors, but I liked the Brimstone the best and it goes best with the Andraste

The Bow and Quiver are the PFC Black Sorrow, which I've shown before.  I'm rather liking this picture of me relaxing against a large tree root.  Peaceful and Sylvan.

The hair is Wasabi Pills Sandy, a hair that The Blogging Elf  wore in March reminded me of it.  Eyes are the IKON Deadshine eyes in Moor. Skin is my usual Belleza Betty.  Ears are from Siyu Suen's Illusions.

Knockers gertie dress.

After doing my entry into Berry's school yearbook meme, I began looking around the other entries and saw a vintage inspired photo by one Georgia Florence Sipe (lilaskyheart Resident), who was a redhead.  As I do like vintage and vintage loving redheads in particular, I checked out her flickr and saw a dress...THIS DRESS, from a store I had not heard of before called KnocKeRs.  I just had to have it.

It has cleavage, it is vintage, and it's so "me". This, like most 50's styles, is a descendant of Dior's famous New Look silhouette from 1947, wasp waisted and full skirted.  You can see hints of the common 50's shirt dress especially in the sleeve, though this is no June Cleaver style shirt dress, not with this much va-va-voom.  Those are the classic Yummy Michelle single strand pearl necklace and earrings you see, and Wasabi Pills Veronica hair.  I just love the little cherry bodice inset and the cute little buttons.

Here we see the full skirt and the cute cherry panel. The easiest way to tell this is a 50's dress and not an actual New Look dress is by the hemline.  New Look dresses have longer hems to the lower calf.  You can also see the Essenz Zurich pumps, which were perfect for this dress.

I happened to get a very good shot while sitting in one of the Duchess booth's.  This is one of the prettiest shots I've ever taken of my avatar. I'm pretty, whee!

The dress is VERY inexpensive, L$150...I bought two, red and black. I'll probably get the green too.

Junbug Naomi gown, guest starring Charlemagne.

Charlemagne and I dance together, quite a bit.  Well, actually the avatars do the dancing, we spend the time chatting. That means I need pretty formal gowns and lots of dresses for dancing with the Charl.  Mostly, we wear red and black, a LOT of red and black.  If I'm wearing black, she's probably in red, if I'm in red, she's probably in black.  The one constant seems to be corsets and cleavage.

And really nice hairdos and jewelry.  Lets just say, we were the best dressed couple at this ballroom.  Which is as it should be.

This is Truth Devinna hair, a very grand updo.  The jewelry is the Breakfast at Tiffany's inspired "Audrey" necklace from Caroline Apollo, which suits this gown well.   Skin is my usual Belleza Betty.  Charl provided this style card:

Belleza Mya 5
Slink hands and feet
Junbug Rosamarie Corset and Skirt Crimson-- Gacha
Emo-tions Cecile necklace and earrings
Wasabi Pills Momo
Lassitude and Ennui's Bound Sandals

Smooching Charlemagne's hand.  And admiring the corset bodice on that red gown.   Mmmm, paleness.  Charl actually makes me look a touch "tanned" in comparison. Her gown is so delectable it makes me think naughty thoughts...about actually using a Gacha.  Why are you looking at me like that, what other naughty thoughts could I be thinking of.

I was wearing THIS junbug gown, Naomi.  When I saw this, at November Fameshed.  I said to myself "I need that for dancing with Charl, but it's Junbug so it might not work well for me."  I've had issues with Junbug fitting before, but this one worked fairly well for me. This one has ruffles on the bodice and front clasps on the corset bodice.  Mmmm, corset.   As an aside, I find Fameshed and Uber to be more tolerable shopping experiences than most other monthly events. (Cough, C88.)   Wasabi pills Jamie hair.

As well as tight lacing and a bit of a bustle effect in the back.  Baby got Bustle.  Yeah the thing is mesh so it doesn't "move" like the old flexi's did, which is sad, but what can we do other than buy the few hybrid gowns out there.  It IS a nice gown, or I wouldn't have bought it.  Well worth picking up if it's your style.

I also have it Red.  Which is probably more gorgeous than the black is, it comes in more colors, but I only have the red and black...so far.  You know how I am about that sort of thing.

What CC is wearing to go with the Baby Monkey Marie shoes.

Took a picture of what I'm currently wearing.  Wanted something to show off some shoooooes.

Yes, it's that Liv Glam "Trains and Winter Rains" suit again, with Amacci "Betty" hair, Caroline Apollo pearls and the "Sophmore" satchel from Mon Tissu.

That outfit says:  "Hello, I'm CC.  I'm not a Domme, but why does everyone keep asking that?  Now leave me alone while I work on my blog or I'll rip your testicles off..and then step on them with these heels."

These heels being these beauties:

Baby Monkey Marie D'Orsay with Ankle strap for Slink High Feet.   Va va voomy Sexpot shoes for the Workplace.  And Baby Monkey knows shoes well enough to actually use the term D'Orsay, which makes me squee in a bit of a shoegasm.

They are only L$99 for the all color pack.  You heard me, L$99.  There is no excuse NOT to get them.  Especially if you lean to the classic or vintage in your Va Va Voomy-ness.  Which I most certainly do.  Every burly-girl in SL probably already has them, if they don't they should.

Ran into Barely Texan...put on a Kunglers dress.

Ran into Barely Texan, the male fashionista who had guested on Harper Beresford's blog, and noted DJ, at a social venue.   Just for fun I wore an dress and hair that Harper had blogged and took a picture next to him.  I then realized I had never blogged this dress myself.

Details on the dress and hair in this post by Harper Beresford

This simply pretty and classic dress is the "Ariana" mesh sleeveless sheath from Kunglers.  Note that the hemline is slightly below the knee, some don't prefer that hemline, though it's one of my preferred hemlines along side mid-knee and slightly above the knee. This a great desk-to-dinner dress, perfect for standing beside an AFK hipster-ish male fashionista with oversized glasses,  and having him make me look good.  Which is his job, making whatever lady fashionista he's standing near look good, not the other way around.  That would go against the natural order of all things Fashionista.  Then there would be chaos, we can't have that.

The hair is "Alicia" from Wasabi pills.  I am wearing it with my usual Belleza "Betty" skin, and Celoe's "Zoe" pumps.

Jewelry is the Bijou Othello set from Sax Shepherd, which is one of my go-to sets and I have the Bijou in all the colors.  With this set you have your choice of two earring colors, black or white and it comes with matinee and princess necklaces.  I'm wearing the matinee length in the photo.

That u.f.o Luna dress you've seen on everyone

You remember that Grecian myth themed C88 a couple of rounds back, and that u.f.o (ur.favorite.one) Luna dress?  Well  like everyone else on the grid, Ihave it, in the long and short versions.  It is such a pretty ethereal goddessy thing, to me it looks more like a negligee than a dress and I've worn it as such.  You have to put up with gaussed and glowed blonde me since I wanted to go all angelic looking.

Hair is Truth Dasha, a simply pretty half-up/down girl-next-door hair.  Skin is my usual Belleza Betty, believe it or not, with blonde brows.  Eyes from IKON, in Floe.  Jewelry is the Sax Shepherd Pearl version of the Spirit of Giving set.  (Yes I have them all)

The shoes are the Opium mules from  Lassitude and Ennui and are a "Must Fatpack" since they're easily the best and prettiest "boudoir" mule for wearing with lingerie in SL.  And yes, they come both with and without marabou pompom

Boogie Trains and Template Complaints

When I first saw the Liv Glam "Yes sir, I can Boogie" (white/black) and Trains and Winter Rains (multiple color hud) suits, I desired them as a classic suit loving SL fashionista should.

Classic military style belted jacket, slim pencil skirt, what's not to love?

What's not to love?  The skirt slit and rigging that's what.  The jacket is fine, the jacket is worth acquiring...the skirt not so much.  Look at the slit placement.  Yes, I know, I should be cheering that it actually HAS a realistic slit, but it would be better if it was centered and not quite so wide.  But the real issue is the rigging, notice  how the skirt clips into the leg.  That effect is worse, the more the legs bend.

Here's a close look at the issue.  It's just simply a problem with the rigging...of the template.   This outfit is a template so I can't blame the Liv-Glam's designer (SamanthaSJones) for this...other than her choice to use a template that really needed some more tweaks and polish.  If the rigging was fixed...I would be recommending this outfit.  But as it is, I can't.  It's not horrible, and I've worn it out and about, but it does need more work.  It's an "almost, but not quite" sort of thing.   Which is what I say about Liv-Glam as a design house...with some reluctance:  "Almost, but not quite a first tier designer...the work is hit or miss, could  use more tweaks/polish/better texture choices, and a second critical eye would do the designer some good.  Not horrible, but not spectacular either, especially since it's probably all templates."

For an example of how this skirt SHOULD be rigged, we have to go no further than the classic Maitreya Nolita.  THAT is how you rig a slightly below the knee skirt.

I've got a couple of other issues with the  Liv-Glam "Boogie/Trains" ensembles.  The HUD colors on the multicolor "Trains and winter rains" version don't match the actual on suit colors closely enough.  And some of those colors aren't very good choices at all, basically making those colors unusable.  Why put unattractive unflattering colors in a HUD?  Put colors that ARE attractive in it.

Theres also the fact that the template origin of the Liv-Glam suits are not mentioned and/or credited.  A customer might not be aware that they're templates, and thusly not know who else besides Liv-Glam to send suggestions/complaints to.  Here's a link to the template on marketplace

Dolphin Designs "The Lady"

It also means that there are most likely other designers using this template that needs more work that I don't know about.  I am absolutely of the opinion that Templates need to be credited in the interest of transparency and honesty to one's customers.  Use templates all you want, but for goodness sake, credit them.

Lelutka Hair: Kate

I'm not for sure I've mentioned liking the Duchess of Cambridge's style on my blog before, but I'm a fan.  In her duties, she tends towards the classic, simple and pretty, skirts around the knee, moderately high but not too high heeled shoes, neutral makeup and long layered hair.  And when she's off duty, she can rock the jeans and ballet flats.  She almost always looks "nice".

As an aside, she has a brain too, graduated from St. Andrews with a Art History degree...with honors mind you.

And how I love her hair.   Thanks be to Lelutka for creating a Kate-ish fluffily wavy-whirly hair.

Normally I'm not a big fan of Lelutka hair because it's "too big" and kind of "there are too many extensions in it for fullness" look.  But this I like.  This is the Jessica color, I had to tint it to get it close to my "proper color".  It's a nice hair, worth demo-ing if you like long layered "girl next door pretty" hair.

Skin is Belleza, Eyes from IKON, Jewellery from Sax Shepherd, and everyone recognizes one of the most recognizable dresses in SL, the Maitreya Nolita.

Harper Ganesvoort's 2014 Oscar Contest

Harper Ganesvoort has done an Oscar photo contest for the past, what is it, 5  years?  Anyway I've been hemming and hawing on the photos (and looking at RL Oscar red carpet photos) for a month trying to decide on the look.  I finally settled on this:

The full length picture is my entry into the contest. Gown is an oldie but goodie, Azul Dailey in Champagne. Skin is Belleza Betty Pale 6 with the Shyla/Betty Pale lips 8 over it. Lashes are Redgrave 'Classy'. Hair is Elikatira Found 8 tinted 128/65/0. Jewelry is Sax Shepherd Designs 'Spirit of Giving' pearl edition. Eyes are IKON Lucid Series in Moor, XS size. Background/Posestand is the oOo Studio: Premiere.

Originally I was going to use Elikatira "Early" hair which was "Anne Hathaway Oscar Look 2013-ish", (you can see that look on my flickr) but my good friend LaDonna said the look reminded her of Jennifer Lawrence's 2013 look.  When she said that, I said, "d'oh" and switched to "Found" which worked better.

The lighting turned out fairly good, I think.  Modified one of AnaLu's windlight presets to get the look I wanted.  Not perfect, but close enough.   You'll notice the shadows and depth of field effect more in the close-up below.

Coldlogic, Hucci and some Fashion Annoyances.

Yes, I know, it's been a while.

As has practically every other fashionista on the grid, I've quantum-packed/fatpacked/Willow Packed, several of Coldlogic's fall releases.  I'm going to show off the coats today.  Which will lead to one of the Annoyances.

Here is the Golding coat in  Blue, which I'm wearing with the addons that makes it look like you're wearing a dress underneath.  I thought the blue would look nicer with me being pale blonde haired "Lutefisk" me.

And here is the Davis coat in Onyx......

Yes, they're the same coat...but different colors of it have different names.

So the 16 different color variations of the SAME coat come in 4 separate fatpacks with different names.  There's Golding, Davis, Berner and Tilton.   Which I find annoying because it's the SAME coat....but Coldlogic is constantly doing their naming like that.  Instead giving variants different names they should just use more adjectives like say "Hathaway solids red" or "Hathaway prints red" instead of the current practice.

It's a nice coat, though I do wish there was an actual dress one could wear underneath rather than just the addon bits.

That's Pink Fuel Harley skin, Truth Felicity Hair, IKON Lucid eyes in Floe and the "second" Light blonde color that looks like the "Swedish/LightBlonde02".  Yummy "Michelle" pearl set

My standard Belleza Betty, also with Truth Felicity in whatever the equivalent to the old "Red05/Blood" color is in the new system without names is, IKON Lucid eyes in Moor.  Earthstones "Tennis set" in platinum

So yes, the lack of color names with the Truth hair is VERY annoying for me.

My spider guest if Harriet the Lady Spider from Caledon, courtesy of Alistair Whybrow. Mon Tissu "Sophomore" bag which is called "Sophmore" in inventory.  That is why designers need a second pair of eyes to double check simple things like that.

I also picked up the Hucci Glynco pump addons to the Slink feet...both the Classic and Nude color fatpacks....because it's the closest thing to the Christian Louboutin Pigalle I've seen in SL.

HUD changeable colors which I find annoying because you can't make outfits with specific colors.  Personally I'd rather just  have every option in the fatpack though I know that would get complicated if the shoe has lots of options.  This one has multiple sole colors...but I stick with the proper red.

With the included foot shape, my feet sunk in the floor, so I had to edit it to add more "height" and "Platform"...this is also why Designers need a second pair of eyes...to catch stuff like that.  Field testing is helpful.  Hosiery is by Luxuria, who has appliers for the Slink Feet....though the term should actually be "applicators"....sighs.

Liv Glam Laurent, the sort of dress I like in RL.

I discovered Liv Glam sometime back after seeing one of their things on an acquaintance.  Most of Liv-glam's styles seem to have a sort of high end department store look to them, which I like for the most part.  To be honest, their stuff can be hit or miss, and some of the texturing is of questionable style on some of their stuff, or could use a little work...but some of it IS worth picking up.  Besides, they have demos.

I picked up this classic "Laurent" wrap dress some months back and was saving a blog post for fall.  It's a simple versatile v-neck mesh dress with a color change hud.  This solid version is only available at the store, but there is also a print version available.  In my opinion, some of the solid colors are questionable choices in a dress like this, but there's enough colors that it does look good in to be worth a look:

Here it is in classic black, desk to dinner, though it is a little cleavagey for desk in RL, but we all know that in SL we tend to show more cleavage...even me.  Shoes are from Elikatira, the Move's.  Skin is my usual Belleza Betty

Just to show you how classic the dress is, here's a similar RL one from Talbots!  I tend to be classic, so I like to peruse Talbots for Internet Window Shopping.  And yes, I based the styling of my picture on the way the Talbot's dress was styled, just to show that classic style works well in SL...and RL.

And here I have used a dark red color.  The hair I used was Wasabi Pills Jamie, which is fairly close, a touch more controlled than the RL hair of the model, which I think suits the dress better.  Jewellery is Drop Stone Pendant and earrings in Gold by Sax Shepherd.  Bag is the "Lourdes" from Alexandra Sautereau via Marketplace

Which I styled like this styling of the dress. Close, but not quite.  The RL dress comes in several colors and it does come in plus and petite sizes and is $109.  It is unlined though.

Ready for fall window shopping in brown, with a scarf from Miel and GOS Equestrian boots.

1-800-Betties, Shimmer Sequins

I think I first mentioned "Betties" back in 2006. they're still around and recently had a VERY large sale...everything in the store was 10L$. So you know what I did..... One of the dresses I found was the one called Shimmer Sequins which is a very nice strapless dress with included choker and earrings. I saw a friend, Kelsi Ember, wearing it at one of my favorite hangouts and put on a contrasting color of it and we danced together...and I took pictures with her permission.

I'm in the Red, Kelsi is in the green. It's a lovely dress ans swirls quite prettily. it comes in several other colors as well. Kelsi is a curvy what some might call "plus size" avatar and it flatters her VERY well. The gloves are included and it really is very pretty and shimmery and lacey...Just a simply pretty cocktail dress.

Shimmer Sequins Cocktail dress from 1-800-Bettie's

Hair on Both of us is from Truth, Seraphina on Kelsi and Amelie on me.

The skin on myself is a 5th & Oxford

Kelsi's skin is a lovely Alyson from Belleza

My shoes are "Eve's" from G Field

Kelsi's shoes are the Tribute pumps from N-Core.
